Michael J. Woodruff was a partner at West, Favor & Woodruff, and a partner at Griffith & Thornburgh, Santa Barbara, California, law firms, during a thirteen year practice, before moving to Northern Virginia in 1985. He was the Director of the Center for Law & Religious Freedom, specializing in a First Amendment practice before the Supreme Court of the United States.
While directing the legal work of the Center, he became the Acting Executive Director of the Christian Legal Society.
He joined Gammon & Grange, P..C. in McLean, Virginia as a shareholder in 1990 and served a term as its managing partner. For 12 years he specialized in Nonprofit law, trusts and estates and litigation.
He was outside general counsel to a college in Massachussetts and taught classes in nonprofit law for George Mason University, government seminars for Eastern Nazarene College, and professional ethics for pastoral counselors for Loyola College of Maryland.
In 2004, Woodruff returned to California as the first General Counsel of The Salvation Army in any of the four territories. His work for the Western Territory included thirteen western states and several Pacific island countries. He was a member and then chair of the National Legal Commission of The Salvation Army, providing an example for providing legal services with inhouse counsel, a model now used by the four territoris of The Salvation Army in the United States.
Michael Woodruff was President and CEO of the Charles Malik Foundation. His community service included being the senior warden at Truro Episcopal Church in Fairfax, Virginia and the chancellor of The Falls Church Episcopal Church.
He lives with his wife Taraneh in Tucson and has three children and seven grandchildren.
